CLIENT PROJECT PROFILE: Choobs Brand Video

Choobs believes that those who give love gather love. They empower folks to do good. To that end, they’ve created an online marketplace where consumers can discover and shop socially conscious brands. These brands care about people, animals, the environment, and more.

We’re inspired by the good Choobs is doing in the world. So, when we set out to partner with them to create video for their brand, we knew we’d be making a piece that captured their audience’s attention just as much as they’d captured ours.

The Making Of Process

For this project, we had the pleasure of working with Choobs founder, Alex Mueller. Like many of our clients, he knew video was something he wanted to incorporate into his brand and marketing strategy, but he didn’t know what type of video would do the trick. So, we kicked off this project by hosting a Video Development Workshop for him. (Check out our blog post “How Our Video Development Workshop Helps Craft Your Perfect Video” for more details on this unique offering).

Through our Workshop, we began to shape the Choobs Brand Film. We zeroed in on its purpose, target audience, look, feel, and sound. Alex was drawn to story and character driven videos because they have an amazing ability to capture the target audience’s attention and leave them feeling empowered and energized. (For more tips on how to create a compelling video, check out our free guide). With the information we gleaned from the Workshop, we crafted and delivered Alex a full project Visual Treatment that outlined his video and the approach we’d be taking to produce it. (What’s a Visual Treatment, you ask, check out our blog post “How Our Video Development Workshop Helps Craft Your Perfect Video” to learn and view an example). Once Alex approved his treatment, we got to work bringing his vision to life.

With development behind us, we launched right into pre-production. Our script called for multiple locations, cast of characters, and a full crew. We secured our locations through the lovely folks at The Forge. And, fortunately, we were able to utilize their office, apartment, and outdoor spaces which helped to streamline our production schedule. This planning wasn’t without its challenges though. We’d originally hoped to film our outdoor scenes at a nearby park, but due to a crazy Chicago winter snowstorm, we had to both reschedule our shoot day and find a more accessible location. During this time, we also auditioned and cast several actors utilizing talent represented by Chicago Talent Network. And last, but certainly not least, we hired our production and post-production crew that consisted of our cinematographer, production sound, gaffer, assistant camera operator, unit production manager, editor, colorist, VFX, and the post sound design team at NoiseFloor.

With all our pre-production tasks managed, it was time to film our video! Production took place over one full day in early 2021. Despite crazy amounts of Chicago snow and some pretty cold temperatures, things went off without a hitch! The day was made even more enjoyable because Alex, Choobs’ founder, was also on set and played a cameo role in the video. We love when our clients are on set with us because it gives them the opportunity to see what we’re capturing and give real-time feedback and suggestions.

With all our footage captured during our production day, we got to work on post-production. Our teams edited, colored, created and added motion graphics to, and sound designed the piece in line with Alex’s feedback throughout.

In the end, this project yielded one 90-second Brand Film (“Look Good, Do Good”) and two 15-second Social Media Video Ads (“Shopping With Choobs” & “Spreading Love With Choobs”). And all the assets were delivered to Alex once he’d given us his final approval, and we knew he was loving each piece. Once in Alex’s hands he was able to distribute them in a variety of ways that best suited his marketing strategy. The main video lives on the Choobs website “About” page providing a new way to connect with visitors. And the videos have been viewed organically thousands of times via the Choobs social media channels - Facebook and Instagram. Since distribution, Alex reports he’s gotten positive feedback from his audience which shows the message he set out to send was received!

Choobs’ Thoughts

We had an amazing time working with Alex and Choobs on this project and love how it turned out. But don’t just take our word for it, here’s what Alex had to say:

“Working with Talus was so smooth. Their communication was always effective. They know how to handle every step in the production process, from start to finish. They made it easy for me to understand how the project was progressing. They cared about my feedback and opinions. Every detail was covered. They delivered the finished product on time and it looked awesome!”
